A city still raw with grief found a way to say goodbye, and the farewell they gave these eight children was one that nobody who was there will ever forget.
Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Mar’Kaydon Pugh, Sariahh Snow, Khedarrion Snow, and Braylon Snow were laid to rest on May 9, 2026, at Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana.
They lost their lives in the most horrible way just last month, but the tributes their families prepared for each child were more than just extraordinary and thoughtful.

A Church Full of Color and Sorrow
Outside the church, a row of hearses stretched along the front, and mourners filed past photographs of the children before taking their seats inside. Everyone in attendance had dressed in pink, purple, and blue, filling the sanctuary with color in a deliberate act of love rather than a sea of black.
Gold crowns and bouquets of white flowers rested on top of each of the eight white caskets. A gospel choir performed throughout the service alongside individual singers, and attendees rose to their feet repeatedly, clapping through tears.
Bishop Bernard Kimble, the senior pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church, began the service with a message that resonated deeply with those in attendance. He told the audience that regardless of the emotions they were facing right now, everyone must remember the goodness of their faith.
Crowns, Characters, and the Names They Went By
Images of the children’s favorite characters, such as Lilo and Stitch, shown with angel wings, stood behind the open caskets. The families also performed a crowning ceremony, where they placed tiaras and crowns on each child to represent eternal life.
The funeral program gave each child back their identity beyond the tragedy. Three-year-old Jayla went by “Jaybae,” Kayla was “K-Mae,” and Mar’Kaydon, the oldest at 10, was “K-Bug.”

Seven-year-old Layla was described as “bright, intelligent, bold, and full of love,” a girl who spent her free time making TikTok videos with her siblings and cousins. Khedarrion, 6, was remembered for “a sweet and loving heart,” with a light his family said “was mighty” despite his short time on earth.
The Question the Whole Room Was Asking
Pastor and gospel singer Kim Burrell spoke about the difficult questions that are hard to put into words, like: Is this fair? And why do such bad things happen?
She emphasized that God is still the same; the one who offers healing for private struggles that people often keep hidden, and added that while not every answer will be provided, people should maintain faith, as he does not make mistakes.
Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor acknowledged that “there are no words sufficient to ease this pain,” while Councilman James Green urged the crowd to reframe the day, calling it a celebration in honor of the children rather than a funeral. The room responded, with people on their feet and clapping throughout.
From City Hall to Capitol Hill
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux read each child’s name aloud before delivering the city’s condolences. “Their presence was a gift: gentle, vibrant and full of promise,” he said. “Their absence is now deeply felt.”
He closed with a call to carry them forward, asking the community to honor the children by holding onto the “gentleness, joy, and love they so freely shared.”
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff over the Capitol and state buildings for the upcoming week. A message read on his behalf described the victims as “the light of their homes and the heart of their classrooms,” children whose futures, he said, had held great promise.
Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, whose own life was forever changed by gun violence in 2011, was also among those who came to pay their respects.
U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields, a Democrat from Louisiana, offered a simple explanation for her presence: she wanted to personally convey to the family that the heartbreak they are experiencing isn’t confined to Louisiana, but is felt by the entire nation.
A Night Before, and a Final Goodbye
The church service was not the first time Shreveport gathered for these children. On May 8, the community came together for a memorial featuring open caskets, floral arrangements, and stuffed Disney character toys placed throughout as one last tribute shaped by what the kids had loved most.
After the May 9 service concluded, buses transported mourners to a graveside burial. Bishop Kimble closed the church service with a prayer that asked for healing.
“Help us as we move from this spot,” he said. “Because we know, oh God, grief is only temporary. And if we’ll put our hands in your favor, you’ll lead us through this.”
How Eight Children Lost Their Lives
As previously reported, what began as a domestic disturbance quickly spiraled into something authorities say was unlike anything they had seen before. Police revealed the events unfolded across four separate locations — two homes, a carjacking scene, and the final confrontation site in Bossier City — turning the case into a complex and fast-moving investigation, according to a report.
Officers were first called to the 300 block of West 79th Street just after 6 a.m., where they encountered what officials described as an “extensive” scene, another outlet reported. But that location was only part of a much larger sequence.

How the Violence Unfolded
Authorities say the violence began on Harrison Street, where Shamar allegedly shot his wife in the face, and she has undergone surgery, according to KSLA. From there, police say he traveled to a second home on the 300 block of West 79th Street, where the situation escalated into unimaginable violence involving multiple victims.
Inside the home, seven children were found dead, while an eighth child was discovered on the back roof, according to NBC News. A 13-year-old boy did manage to flee, reportedly jumping from the roof and surviving with broken bones, according to KSLA.

According to the Shreveport Times, authorities revealed that the violence began with the children’s mother. Shreveport Police Department Corporal and spokesperson Chris Bordelon said Shamar allegedly shot the mother first before killing eight children — seven of whom were his own — in what investigators believe was a domestic incident.
The victims ranged in age from about 1 to 12 years old, and two women — one believed to be his wife — were left in critical condition. While the motive remains unclear, Bordelon said detectives are confident the case was “entirely a domestic incident.”

Victims Found Across the Scene
In total, police say 10 people were shot during the incident, according to NBC News. Two women — one believed to be Shamar’s wife and another possibly his girlfriend — survived but were left in critical condition, while eight children lost their lives.
Authorities later confirmed that seven of the children were Shamar’s own, while one was a cousin, according to the publication. As details continued to emerge, the full scale of the loss became even more heartbreaking.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed that three boys and five girls, ranging in age from 3 to 11, were killed, according to a report from the Shreveport Times.

A Deadly Chase and a Scene Officials Struggle to Describe
After the shootings, authorities say Shamar fled the scene and reportedly carjacked a vehicle, according to reporting from KSLA. The situation then escalated into a police chase stretching from Shreveport into Bossier City. The pursuit ended on Brompton Lane, where gunfire was exchanged between Shamar and officers.
Police say it remains unclear whether he died from a self-inflicted gunshot or from shots fired by law enforcement, according to reports from the outlet.

As officers worked the scene, the scale of the tragedy became clear. “This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. “It’s a terrible morning.”
Authorities also described it as a “horrible act of violence unlike anything we’ve ever seen in our city.” As investigators worked to reconstruct the timeline, attention began to shift beyond the crime scene.

Three Warning Signs Before the Tragedy?
While investigators focus on evidence, online observers have turned their attention to Shamar’s past behavior, especially moments now being described as possible red flags.
A Life That Seemed Ordinary — Until It Wasn’t
Before the tragedy, Shamar appeared to many as someone living a relatively stable life. He worked at UPS and previously served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020 as a signal support systems specialist and a fire support specialist, according to a New York Post report.

But behind that routine, there were signs of strain. A coworker described him as a devoted dad who often seemed overwhelmed, adding that he would pull his hair out, leaving a noticeable bald spot, the publication reported.
According to the outlet, Shamar also had two previous convictions, including for driving while intoxicated in 2016 and for the illegal use of weapons in 2019.

Mahelia said she was unclear about what problems her son and his wife — who married in 2024 and have four children together — had been facing. She also explained that she had reconnected with him more than a decade earlier after he had been raised by a family friend, Betty Walker, during a period when she was struggling with addiction as a teenager.
Betty said she was not present during the shootings but later learned that Shamar shot his wife multiple times in the head and stomach. She recalled seeing him just the weekend before at a family dinner, noting that nothing about his behavior seemed out of the ordinary.
“I was getting up this morning to make myself some coffee, and I got the call,” Betty said. “My babies — my babies are gone.”

A March Post About His Relationship
One Facebook post from March 8, 2026, is drawing renewed attention. Responding to a prompt about choosing a different partner while keeping the same children, Shamar wrote:
“Hell yehhhhhhhh I would.”

A Chilling Warning Weeks Before the Tragedy
Weeks before the shooting, Shamar reportedly opened up about his mental state during a phone call with family. According to the New York Post, the ex-Army Veteran on Easter Sunday called his mother, Mahelia Elkins, and his stepfather, Marcus Jackson, and said he was drowning in “dark thoughts,” wanted to end his life, and that his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, wanted a divorce.
The outlet reported that Marcus said:
“I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. I don’t care what you’re going through, you can beat it.’ Then I remember him telling me: ‘Some people don’t come back from their demons.'”

A Timeline Through His Own Words
His social media posts in the days leading up to the tragedy present a striking contrast. In a post dated April 5, 2026, he wrote, “Happy Easter had a wonderful time at church for the first time with all my kids what a blessed day.”

Days later, on April 9, 2026, he shared a prayer asking for strength against anxiety, anger, and depression. Part of the prayer reads, “Dear God. Today, I ask You to help me guard my mind and my emotions […] Help me to remember that there is power in Your name and that every force not from You must flee.”
“When depression tries to settle in, when anger rises, when anxiety or panic comes, give me the awareness to recognize what is not from You and the strength to reject it immediately in the name of JESUS,” his prayer added.

Then, on April 17, 2026, he posted a picture of his daughter, caught unawares, eating a burger. He captioned the post, “Lol!!!! Took my oldest on a lil 1 on 1 date, had to catch her down bad ugh ugh……..” To many, the posts now feel unsettling in hindsight.

Online Viewers React
As his March 8, 2026, post and other posts circulated, social media viewers began sharing their reactions. One commenter wrote, “Yeah, the warning signs were there.” Another said, “This is where he told his story.” A third added, “Definitely needed another baby daddy. God rest their souls. My heart hurts for this momma.”
Others pointed to systemic failures, with one writing, “There is [sic] ALWAYS red flags. Police and social services dropped the ball. Again #notallmenalwaysaman.” And another concluded, “There was [sic] signs all over his page.”

The Questions That Remain
Despite the growing focus on his online activity and the expanding details from the crime scene, officials say many questions remain unanswered.
What led to the violence — and whether warning signs could have been recognized sooner — is now at the center of both the investigation and public conversation. And as more details continue to emerge, the images, the timeline, and the words he left behind are only deepening the mystery.
