Carrie Underwood has always embraced her roots—literally and figuratively. Raised on a farm, the country music superstar has developed a love for gardening and sustainable living in recent years. She often refers to her garden as one of her “happy places,” a space where she finds peace, purpose, and time to reflect.
Over time, she has offered fans a peek into her flourishing homestead, nestled in the scenic countryside of Franklin, Tennessee. After marrying former NHL player Mike Fisher in 2010, the couple envisioned a serene retreat where they could raise a family and reconnect with nature. In 2011, they purchased 400 acres of land and began building their dream estate—complete with horse stables, a scenic lake, orchards, and rolling hills.
During a segment on Oprah’s Next Chapter, the couple gave viewers a glimpse of the property in its early stages. Fisher highlighted future plans, including an orchard and a picnic area with panoramic views and fresh breezes.
Their deep connection to the land is reflected in the lifestyle they’ve cultivated. Underwood, an advocate for organic living, has expanded her garden into a self-sustaining operation. She now cares for chickens, grows a variety of produce, and tends to fruit trees including apples, peaches, blueberries, and blackberries.
In 2023, she added a custom greenhouse to her property, created by California-based Epic Gardening. The space features herb beds, citrus trees, and a dedicated potting area. Just outside, raised beds flourish with vegetables, and a chicken coop provides a steady supply of eggs.
Their property has grown into a haven for animals as well. In 2020, Fisher surprised Underwood with two cows—charmingly named Brownie and Oreo by their son, Isaiah. The family also keeps bees, adding honey to their list of homegrown goods.
On YouTube’s Epic Gardening and The Dr. Axe Show, Underwood shared her passion for growing food and reducing reliance on stores. “My goal is to not buy food from the store anymore,” she said, describing how their meals are often made from garden produce and ethically sourced meat.
Her love of gardening continues to evolve. In 2023 alone, she grew over 30 varieties of tomatoes, along with squash, beans, peppers, and onions. “I’ve always been great with tomatoes,” she noted, proudly referencing their vibrant yield.
She also focuses on sustainability. Leftover scraps go to the chickens or are composted to enrich the soil. “It’s all fun. It feels good to physically do all these things,” she said.
Beyond the garden, the couple designed their home to be both cozy and functional. Underwood once shared that her “must-haves” included a wood-burning fireplace, porch swing, and rocking chairs. The finished estate features multiple living spaces, a spacious walk-in closet, and plenty of room for their sons, Isaiah and Jacob.
Their decision to relocate from Brentwood to Franklin in 2018 was influenced by a desire for privacy and peace. The countryside setting offered the ideal backdrop for the life they were building together.
Though their journey hasn’t been without challenges, Underwood and Fisher have remained grounded in their values. With a strong focus on family, faith, and self-sufficiency, they’ve transformed their land into more than just a home—it’s a way of life.
